About this site

CoinMarketCap is one of the earliest market-cap and price aggregators in the crypto industry, founded and maintained by the company of the same name and currently operated independently under the Binance group. Its mission is to consolidate real-time data on thousands of crypto assets and hundreds of spot and derivatives venues, and to surface that data through web, mobile, and API channels.

The product covers six broad data lines: live price, market capitalization, circulating and max supply; 24-hour and historical OHLC charts; spot and derivatives volume comparison across exchanges; stablecoin peg status and reserve transparency; airdrop and token-unlock calendars; trending lists and newly-listed boards. Around this core sit user-facing tools such as watchlists, price alerts, portfolio tracking, a glossary, the "Academy" educational section, and a paid Pro API geared at developers and institutions.

Three typical usage patterns stand out: newcomers use it as a quick lookup for what a coin is, where it trades, and at what level; financial media and research desks cite it as a basic data source for crypto assets; active traders use it to compare cross-exchange spreads and liquidity for the same instrument.

Within the aggregator segment it shares the top tier with CoinGecko. CoinMarketCap leans toward exchange-reported data, broader coin and venue coverage, and a more mainstream consumer brand; CoinGecko tends to be richer on long-tail tokens and on-chain project metadata. Unlike TradingView, it is not built for deep chart-based trading analysis; its center of gravity is information aggregation rather than execution-oriented charting.

Limitations and caveats: volume figures depend on exchange self-reporting and have historically been challenged on wash-trading grounds, which the site now mitigates with liquidity and traffic-weighted adjustments; the web app loads multiple analytics scripts and accessibility may vary by region and network conditions; rankings, scores, and trending boards shown on the site are research aids only and should not be read as investment advice.
