MetaMask is one of the earliest and most widely adopted self-custodial browser wallets in the Ethereum and EVM ecosystem, maintained long-term by the ConsenSys team. Calling it "a wallet" undersells its role — it functions as the default gateway through which users reach the EVM on-chain world, since most dApps, DeFi protocols, and NFT marketplaces support MetaMask login and signing out of the box.

The product is built around the EVM ecosystem. Browser extensions (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave) plus native mobile apps (iOS, Android) with synchronized accounts. Multi-EVM-chain support: out of the box with mainnet, plus user-added custom RPCs for Polygon, Arbitrum, BNB Chain, and hundreds of additional networks. Signature interactions including message signing, permit-style approvals, transaction simulation, and gas estimation. An embedded swap aggregator and fiat on-ramp partners. Hardware-wallet pairing with Ledger, Trezor, GridPlus and others. A Snap plug-in framework that extends protocol coverage for developers.

Use cases are broad. First-time DeFi users start here to connect to Uniswap, Aave, and similar protocols. NFT participants log into OpenSea, Blur, and other marketplaces. Developers and quant teams use the RPC interface and developer docs to debug contracts. Institutional users pair it with a hardware wallet, treating MetaMask as the "software signing front-end" and the hardware as the "key custody back-end."

Its differentiator is default-of-ecosystem positioning. Rabby offers a more refined DeFi experience with stronger pre-sign prompts; Phantom dominates the Solana ecosystem. But MetaMask's accumulated network effect makes it the zero-configuration default for most dApps — an advantage difficult for newer wallets to replicate. The trade-off is limited native support for non-EVM chains such as Solana, TON, or Bitcoin, which often require Snap-based extensions.

Limitations, security, and compliance: as a self-custodial wallet, all responsibility for the seed phrase and private keys lies with the user, **and any leakage or loss results in permanent and unrecoverable loss of assets**. Browser extensions are a primary target for phishing — users should only install from official domains and treat any prompt to "recover" or "re-enter" the seed phrase as a hostile signal. Read transaction details carefully before signing; approval-style signatures (approve / permit) can authorize subsequent silent withdrawals. dApp interactions carry smart-contract, slippage, and protocol-failure risk.
