Brief history
Wubi was developed in the 1980s (Wang Yongmin et al.) as a shape-based code: radicals mapped to five keyboard zones (横竖撇捺折). Version 86 (~130 roots) became the standard; later variants include 98, Xinshiji, and Jidian with slightly different rules.
How splitting works
Split strokes into roots, map to zone keys; add an identification key if fewer than four. Structure type sets the order. Bold glyphs on the keyboard chart are level-1 shortcuts.
